Bill Messerschmidt Teaching Human Factors in Bowling Green, Kentucky
On November 1, Bill Messerschmidt will be teaching a three-day class on Human Factors in Traffic Accident Reconstruction through the Forensic Training Group. The class focuses on helping police and private reconstruction experts understand and apply the fundamentals of Human Factors science to their work in traffic collision reconstruction.
Bill’s class begins with the basics: What is Human Factors, anyway? While traditional accident reconstruction focuses on applying principles of forensic science, physics, and mathematics to discrete physical evidence, Human Factors takes a broader perspective and looks at how the totality of the system affected (or did not affect) the human operators and decision-makers. Correctly applied, HF/E can help investigating police officers advise prosecutors to make better charging decisions, and help experts in the civil realm provide a more complete understanding to their clients and ultimately to the Court.
The class will address topics such as visibility, response times, response choices, driver distraction, impairments such as fatigue or intoxicants, and HF considerations unique to trucks, motorcycles, and pedestrians.
